First Solo Wild Camping Experience

Tent setup underneath Scarey Tor

My Decision

It was my birthday, and in the midst of my newfound passion for hiking and wild camping, I decided there was no better way to celebrate than embarking on my first solo wild camping trip. As I packed my bag and headed out the door, the anticipation and nervous excitement were palpable. For the first time, it would be just me, my backpack, and nature.

My Fears

Planning the trip brought forth a mix of nerves and excitement. Not only was it my first solo expedition, but it was also my first winter camp. November’s chilly nights added an extra layer of uncertainty. The fear of the unknown crept in, especially the thought of being alone in the wilderness, with only a thin layer of canvas separating me from the unknown. The idea of potential encounters with other people outside my tent whilst I’m trapped in my sleeping bag was particularly nerve-wracking. However, as I began to pack, excitement gradually overshadowed my fears.

The Plan

To ease my nerves, I opted for a short and familiar trek at Dartmoor National Park. A one-night, two-day journey, starting and ending in the charming village of Belstone. My destination was Scarey Tor, a spot I was familiar with from my first ever wild camping experience which I embarked on with a friend. Packing light with just the essentials – tent, sleeping bag, roll mat, minimal clothing, and provisions for dinner, breakfast, and a birthday beer – I set off.

The Adventure

Day 1:

Arriving in Belstone as evening approached, I felt a mix of nerves and determination. This was uncharted territory for me, having only camped with others before. With the fading light, I made my way to Scarey Tor. Setting up camp swiftly, I cooked a hearty sausage stew on my trusty Trangia stove, accompanied by a well-deserved ale. As darkness enveloped the moor, the reality of solitude sunk in. Yet, amidst the nerves, there was an undeniable thrill, like having butterflies in my stomach but being excited at the same time! Wrapping myself in my sleeping bag, I drifted off, wondering what the night would bring.

Day 2:

To my surprise, I awoke refreshed at dawn. Despite my fears of the silence, the night had passed peacefully. After a breakfast of bacon and eggs, I packed up camp, leaving no trace, and embarked on my hike. The morning sun illuminated the landscape as I traversed Higher Tor and Belstone Tor, relishing the solitude and stunning views. The absence of other hikers in November added to the serenity. After what had been the most enjoyable morning walk of my life so far, I reluctantly returned to Belstone, and the adventure came to its end.

Lessons Learned/ Reflection

Driving home, I reflected on the experience. My fears had centered on external factors beyond my control. Yet, by staying busy and focusing on the journey, I found solace. The short duration and familiar route had made the experience less daunting. My confidence soared, and as I drove home, I was tempted to turn around and do it all over again.
